June 10, 2010 - RICKY DOUGLAS DEVENY, age 51, of Gulfport, Mississippi, was arrested, without incident, by special agents of the FBI on June 10, 2010 in Gulfport. DEVENY, who owned, operated, and controlled Sandstone Construction, Inc., was arrested pursuant to an 11-count indictment issued by a federal grand jury in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi in Gulfport on June 2, 2010.
In the indictment, DEVENY is charged with wire fraud. He is alleged to have intentionally devised and carried out a scheme and artifice to defraud and to obtain money or property from at least 10 homeowners in Harrison and Hancock Counties by means of materially false and fraudulent pretenses, representations, and promises.
Daniel McMullen, Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI in Mississippi, stated, “The indictment charges that Deveny enticed individuals to invest in his company, Sandstone Construction, Inc., by creating false and misleading real estate contracts. In addition, Deveny allegedly collected money from victim homeowners, in amounts varying from $18,775.00 to $320,000.00, for construction or repair work which was never completed.”
DEVENY made an initial appearance before United States Senior Magistrate Judge John M. Roper, Sr., United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi, Gulfport, Mississippi, at 11:00 a.m. this morning. DEVENY was released on bond and his arraignment was set for Monday, June 21, 2010 at 9:30 a.m.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Carlos Tanner.
SAC McMullen stressed that indictments and arrests are accusations only and there is a presumption of innocence prior to any judicial proceeding.
