Mass violence and school shootings heighten the perception that schools are dangerous places for youth, but nationally available data on trends in violence and victimization at school reveal that levels of overall violence declined from 1992 to 2017. How do we reconcile these trends with the pervasive sense that the number of school shootings is increasing and that schools are becoming increasingly dangerous places?
