The United States Attorney’s Office Announces the Sentencing of a Former Luzerne County Commissioner

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announces that former Luzerne County Commissioner, Gregory A. Skrepenak, who accepted a thing of value in the amount of $5,000 in exchange for official action, was sentenced today in Scranton by United States District Court Judge Richard P. Conaboy to 24 months’ imprisonment. Judge Conaboy further ordered that Skrepenak pay a $5,000 fine and serve three years of supervised release.

According to United States Attorney Peter J. Smith, Skrepenak, age 40, of Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania, accepted a reward or gratuity valued at $5,000 in connection with support provided by Skrepenak to a resolution adopted by the Luzerne County Commissioners to facilitate the creation of a Tax Increment District in Jenkins Township.

In December 2009, the United States Attorney’s Office filed a Criminal Information against Skrepenak, who pled guilty in January 2010.

Skrepenak is approximately the 26th individual to plead guilty or be sentenced in the almost two-year investigation of local government corruption in the Middle District being conducted by federal law enforcement agencies.

The inquiry includes the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division, and the United States Department of Education, Office of Inspector General and is bring prosecuted by a team led by Senior Litigation Counsel Gordon Zubrod and includes Assistant U.S. Attorneys William Houser, Michael Consiglio, Amy Phillips, John Gurganus and Criminal Division Chief Christian Fisanick.
