Defining Evidence-Based Policing

 

NIJ’s new feature, Term of the Month, promotes research-based definitions of criminal justice terminology. This month, we’re defining Evidence-Based Policing — the intersection of policing and science — and sharing several recent NIJ resources to advance the field of policing.

Evidence-Based Policing (EVP) definition: Using data, analysis, and research to complement experience and professional judgment, in order to provide the best possible police service to the public. EVP refers to scientific evidence, not evidence in the legal or investigative sense.
