SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Wesley Ian Groves, 35, of Fairfield,
was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Kimberly J. Mueller, to four years
in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney McGregor
W. Scott announced.
Groves pleaded guilty on May 20, 2019. According to court
records, in December 2018, police stopped Groves’ car for a traffic violation.
When the officer spoke to Groves, Groves said he had a gun underneath the
driver’s seat. The officer searched the car and found a loaded pistol under the
driver’s seat. The pistol was loaded with one round in the chamber and three
rounds in the magazine. A subsequent records check showed that the gun was
reported stolen out of Reno, Nevada. Groves cannot lawfully possess firearms or
ammunition because he has previously been convicted of three felony offenses.
This case was the product of an investigation by the
Fairfield Police Department with assistance from the FBI’s Solano County
Violent Crimes Task Force and the Solano County District Attorney’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy H. Delgado prosecuted the case.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods
(PSN), the centerpiece of the Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction
efforts. PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing
violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to
identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop
comprehensive solutions to address them. As part of this strategy, PSN focuses
enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally
based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.
