Two Suspected Smugglers Arrested
Yuma, Ariz. — Border Patrol agents from Yuma Sector arrested two suspected smugglers and seized more than 200 pounds of marijuana yesterday morning.
Wellton Station agents patrolling near Gila Bend detected a group traveling through the desert with large, rectangular backpacks. Agents observed the individuals enter a Chevrolet pickup truck and attempted to stop the vehicle. In an attempt to evade arrest, the occupants fled the vehicle. Agents apprehended two suspects and seized nine bundles of marijuana in the pickup.
The marijuana, valued at $101,000, and vehicle were seized. The suspects, both Mexican nationals, were processed for removal.
Yuma Sector has been effective in combating smuggling organizations attempting to transport contraband through southwestern Arizona. The probabilities of arrest and associated penalties cause smugglers to often abandon their drug loads rather than risk apprehension and prosecution.
