U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Sean Johnson, age 21, of Lower Brule, appeared before U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on June 20, 2012 and pled guilty to count one of an indictment that charged him with sexual abuse of a minor. The maximum penalty upon conviction is any term of years up to 15 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both.
The conviction stems from the time frame of November 2011 to February 2012, when Johnson and the minor victim met and began communicating via text messages. In February 2012, Johnson admitted to having sex with the minor victim three separate times.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for September 10, 2012. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending sentencing.
