Gaithersburg Armed Career Criminal Exiled to 15 Years in Prison for Illegal Possession of a Gun

Greenbelt, Maryland — Chief U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow sentenced Everett Floyd Jenkins, age 51, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, today to 15 years in prison followed by five years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a gun. Chief Judge Chasanow enhanced Jenkins’ sentence upon finding that he is an armed career criminal based on previous convictions for second degree murder, attempted distribution of heroin and distribution of heroin.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Steven L. Gerido of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Baltimore Field Division; and Chief J. Thomas Manger of the Montgomery County Police Department.

According to statements made at the plea and sentencing hearings, on December 24, 2011, Jenkins was pulled over by Montgomery County Police on Lost Knife Road. As one officer spoke with Jenkins at the driver’s window, a second officer approached the car on the passenger side and saw the handle of a handgun sticking out of Jenkins’ pants pocket. Jenkins was removed from the car and loaded 9mm semi–automatic pistol was recovered from his pants pocket. The gun was found to have been stolen in Alabama in 2002–2003. According to court documents, Jenkins was driving under the influence of alcohol and his arrest was precipitated by a concerned citizen who witnessed Jenkins driving erratically on I–270 and striking a barrier.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the ATF and Montgomery County Police Department for their work in this investigation. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant United States Attorney Emily Glatfelter, who prosecuted the case.
