Greenbelt,
Maryland — Chief U.S. District Judge Deborah K. Chasanow sentenced Everett
Floyd Jenkins, age 51, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, today to 15 years in prison
followed by five years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of
a gun. Chief Judge Chasanow enhanced Jenkins’ sentence upon finding that he is
an armed career criminal based on previous convictions for second degree
murder, attempted distribution of heroin and distribution of heroin.
The
sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland
Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Steven L. Gerido of the Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives – Baltimore Field Division; and Chief
J. Thomas Manger of the Montgomery County Police Department.
According
to statements made at the plea and sentencing hearings, on December 24, 2011,
Jenkins was pulled over by Montgomery County Police on Lost Knife Road. As one
officer spoke with Jenkins at the driver’s window, a second officer approached
the car on the passenger side and saw the handle of a handgun sticking out of
Jenkins’ pants pocket. Jenkins was removed from the car and loaded 9mm
semi–automatic pistol was recovered from his pants pocket. The gun was found to
have been stolen in Alabama in 2002–2003. According to court documents, Jenkins
was driving under the influence of alcohol and his arrest was precipitated by a
concerned citizen who witnessed Jenkins driving erratically on I–270 and
striking a barrier.
