MADISON, WIS. -- John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for
the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Andrew J. Scoles, 36, Cross
Plains, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Lynn S. Adelman to 20
months in federal prison, followed by a three-year term of supervised release,
for unlawfully possessing firearms as a convicted felon. The defendant’s
advisory sentencing guidelines range was 70 to 87 months. Scoles pleaded guilty
to this charge on May 20, 2014.
On December 22, 2013, Scoles purchased two boxes of
Weatherby .300 Magnum ammunition after having previously been convicted of a
felony. Scoles was convicted on December 5, 2012, in Green County Circuit Court
for felony possession of THC. At the time of the purchase of the ammunition,
Scoles was also on probation in Green County for a misdemeanor domestic abuse
battery and disorderly conduct conviction, and a domestic abuse injunction,
both of which also prohibited him from possessing any firearms or ammunition
under federal law.
A search of Scoles’ residence on January 22, 2014 revealed
19 firearms in his possession and several hundred rounds of ammunition.
The charge against Scoles was the result of an investigation
conducted by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of the case has been handled by
Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter M. Jarosz.
