BOSTON – A Boston man pleaded guilty today in federal court
in Boston to fentanyl distribution.
Anthony Smallwood, 29, pleaded guilty to four counts of
distribution and possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of
fentanyl. U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Stearns scheduled sentencing for
May 27, 2020. Smallwood was previously
charged by criminal complaint and arrested on May 22, 2019.
According to court records, between March and May 2019,
Smallwood engaged in four separate drug sales of fentanyl to a witness
cooperating with the government. These sales totaled over 230 grams of
fentanyl.
The charges of distribution of, and possession with intent
to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl, each carry a mandatory minimum
sentence of five years and up to 40 years in prison, a minimum of four years of
supervised release and a fine of up to $5 million. Sentences are imposed by a
federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and
other statutory factors.
United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling; Joseph R.
Bonavolonta, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,
Boston Field Office; and Boston Police Commissioner William Gross made the
announcement today. Valuable assistance was provided by members of the
Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Strike Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney
Stephen W. Hassink of Lelling’s Narcotics and Money Laundering Unit is
prosecuting the case
