PHOENIX, Ariz. –
On January 13, 2020, Jarrett Michael Yazzie (42), of Leupp, Ariz. was sentenced
by U.S. District Judge Douglas L. Rayes to 150 months in prison to run
concurrent with his sentence of 120 months in prison, to be followed by five
years of supervised release. Yazzie had
previously pleaded guilty to assault resulting in serious bodily injury and
assault by strangulation or suffocation by a spouse or intimate partner.
Between May 1,
2016 and April 20, 2018, Yazzie struck a minor victim in the face with his hand
causing serious bodily injury. In July
2017, Yazzie strangled an adult victim two times, impeding the victim’s ability
to breathe. The assaults happened on the
Navajo Indian Reservation and Yazzie is a member of the Navajo Nation.
The investigation
in this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the
Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety.
The prosecution was handled by Christina J. Reid-Moore, Assistant U.S.
Attorney, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
