February 9, 2010 - SACRAMENTO, CA—United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that FREDERICK SCOTT SALYER, 54, of Pebble Beach, California, made his initial appearance in federal court today before United States Magistrate Judge Steven Gold in Brooklyn, N.Y. SALYER did not enter a plea.
Counsel for SALYER sought bail, while the government moved to detain SALYER as a flight risk. Following argument on the government’s motion, Judge Gold, citing the evidence presented by the government, denied bail and ordered SALYER transported to Sacramento for trial. In issuing his ruling, Judge Gold stated that this was “one of the most elaborate schemes to flee” that he had ever seen.
SALYER was arrested by FBI Special Agents yesterday at JFK Airport after arriving from Europe, and is charged with 20 counts of wire fraud and mail fraud. He will be transported to Sacramento by the U.S. Marshals and is expected to appear in U.S. District Court in Sacramento in the near future.
