February 19, 2010 - LOUISVILLE, KY—United States Attorney Candace G. Hill of the Western District of Kentucky announced today that on February 18, 2010, Kevin Lamont Harris, age 47, of Louisville, Kentucky, in Jefferson County, pled guilty to charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), submitting a false writing to HUD, and wire fraud, all relating to disbursement of grant funds for the development of the Maupin School by the Shiloh Community Renewal Center into a senior living center.
The indictment alleges that between February 25, 1998 through November 2, 2005, Harris and other co-conspirators agreed to commit offenses against the United States, including illegally diverting federal grant funds, submitting a materially false report to justify expenditures, and executing a scheme to defraud by using the wire transfers to transfer grant funds.
The maximum potential penalties are 30 years' imprisonment, a $250,000 fine per count, and supervised release for a period of up to three years.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Joshua Judd and Jim Lesousky and it was investigated by the United States Housing and Urban Development, Office of the Inspector General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Harris is scheduled to appear for sentencing before United States District Court Judge Jennifer B. Coffman on June 21, 2010, at 10:00 a.m., in Louisville, Kentucky.
