National Motor Vehicle Title Information System Law Enforcement Access Tool Helps with Vehicle-Related Investigations

U.S. law enforcement agencies increasingly use the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) law enforcement access tool to investigate vehicle-related crimes, including the New York Police Department, which recently used it to close 12 auto theft cases. NMVTIS provides secure access to vehicle history; future enhancements to the Bureau of Justice Assistance-sponsored tool will allow users to search title numbers and partial VINs, and also execute a multiple VIN search of up to 5,000 VINs at once.

NMVTIS is available at no cost to law enforcement through the Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) or the Law Enforcement Enterprise Portal (LEEP). If you are a law enforcement officer and would like instructions for accessing NMVTIS data, please email NMVTIS@usdoj.gov.
