Edinburg, Texas ─ U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Rio Grande Valley Sector confiscated more than $7.6 million worth of marijuana in multiple seizures over the past five days and early Thursday morning. Two of the largest seizures were made by agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station, the first one occurring Saturday in Chapeño, Texas. In that incident agents saw three pickup trucks traveling north away from the Rio Grande. When the agents attempted to stop the vehicles, the smugglers drove off the road and fled into the nearby brush ─ leaving behind more than 2,200 pounds of marijuana.
The other large seizure occurred Thursday morning near Escobares, Texas, when agents encountered a group of smugglers loading bundles of marijuana into a Chevrolet Tahoe. The agents immediately identified themselves as Border Patrol agents, at which time the smugglers scattered into the brush and the Tahoe’s driver sped off. The driver of the Tahoe abandoned the vehicle on the side of the road after driving a short distance and fled. Inside the vehicle agents found more than 1,500 pounds of marijuana.
Several additional seizures from Saturday through Thursday morning brought the total amount of marijuana seized to more than 9,500 pounds. It was turned over to the appropriate agencies for further investigation.
Additionally, agents assigned to the Fort Brown Station saved the live of an illegal alien they encountered near Brownsville, Texas, Wednesday. The man, who is a Mexican national, was showing signs of dehydration and collapsed when agents attempted to give him water. Agents requested medical air support and the man was airlifted to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville. He will be processed accordingly once he is released.
