ALBUQUERQUE – Christian Begay, 29, an enrolled member of the
Navajo Nation who resides in Shiprock, N.M., was sentenced today in federal
court in Albuquerque, N.M., to 78 months in prison for his assault
conviction. Begay will be on supervised
release for three years after completing his prison sentence.
Begay was arrested on May 26, 2016, on a criminal complaint
charging him with shooting a Navajo man on May 21, 2016. The complaint stated that the victim suffered
severe damage to the pelvic bone and required hospitalization.
Begay was indicted on June 15, 2016, and was charged with
assault with a dangerous weapon, a firearm, with intent to do bodily harm;
assault resulting in serious bodily injury; and using and carrying a firearm in
furtherance of a crime of violence.
According to the indictment, Begay committed the crimes on May 21, 2016,
on the Navajo Indian Reservation in San Juan County, N.M.
On Aug. 22, 2017, Begay pled guilty to a felony information
charging him with assault with intent to commit murder. In entering the guilty plea, Begay admitted
that on May 21, 2016, he assaulted the victim with a dangerous weapon, a
firearm, by shooting the victim with the intention of murdering the victim.
This case was investigated by the Farmington office of the
FBI and the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety and was prosecuted by
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Elaine Y. Ramirez and Raquel Ruiz-Velez.
