Boston FBI Investigates Phony Bridal Show
March 2, 2010 - The Boston FBI’s cyber unit and the Boston Police Department are investigating a scam in which hundreds of wedding industry vendors paid large sums of money for booth space and thousands of individuals bought tickets to attend a bridal show that, in fact, was fake.
According to investigators, the event looked legitimate. The supposed show was prolifically promoted on the Internet, Facebook, and Twitter. Only after some vendors called the Hynes Convention Center to inquire about when they could set up their booth displays was it realized that an elaborate hoax had taken place.
The FBI and Boston Police continue to investigate. Victims are asked to contact the Boston Police Department by e-mail at victims.bpd@cityofboston.gov. Anyone with information about the scam is asked to call the FBI at (617) 742-5533.
