Federal Inmate Indicted in Murder Attempt

March 12, 2010 - COLUMBIA, SC—Acting United States Attorney Kevin F. McDonald stated today that Ernesto A. Martin, age 41, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution at Estill, South Carolina, was indicted by a federal grand jury for assault with intent to commit murder within the Institution. Authorities allege that Martin stabbed a fellow inmate numerous times last November during a card game.

The maximum penalty Martin could receive is a fine of $250,000 and an additional term of imprisonment for 20 years.

Mr. McDonald stated that the case was investigated by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and that he has assigned the case to Assistant United States Attorney Nick Bianchi of the Charleston office for prosecution.

The Acting United States Attorney stated that all charges in this Indictment are merely accusations and that all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
