March 5, 2010 - A superseding indictment was unsealed today in Brooklyn federal court charging Anthony Antico with racketeering conspiracy, Hobbs Act robbery, and firearms offenses. The indictment alleges that Antico, a captain in the Genovese organized crime family of La Cosa Nostra, agreed to the commission of racketeering predicate acts including conspiring and attempting to rob Staten Island jeweler Louis Antonelli and another individual identified as “John Doe.” The case has been assigned to United States District Judge Carol B. Amon.
The charges were announced by Benton J. Campbell, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and George Venizelos, Acting Assistant Director-in-Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office.
As set forth in court submissions, Louis Antonelli was shot on April 29, 2008, during an attempt to rob him of jewelry and cash. Antonelli subsequently died from the gunshot wounds.
Antico faces mandatory life imprisonment if convicted of any of the charged counts.
The government’s case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys John Buretta and Nicole Argentieri.
