Suspect Facing Sexual Assault Charge Captured
San Antonio, TX – Leonard Willis, 48, was arrested this
afternoon by members of the United States Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive
Task Force (LSFTF) in San Antonio, TX. An arrest warrant was issued pursuant to
an investigation by the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO), where it is
alleged that Willis committed sexual assault.
On June 2, 2015, members of the LSFTF were contacted by members
of the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force (GCRFTF) to assist in searching
for Willis in New Braunfels, TX. Members of the LSFTF immediately initiated an
investigation in locating and apprehending Willis. This afternoon, through
investigative efforts and extensive surveillance, task force officers observed
Willis working in the 700 block of North Interstate 35 on the east side of New
Braunfels. Task force officers approached Willis, identified themselves, and
took him into custody without incident.
On October 3, 2014, Willis was allegedly involved in
sexually assaulting a young woman at his home in Crystal Beach, TX. A police
report was filed with the GCSO and an immediate investigation was conducted.
After a thorough investigation by GCSO investigators, an arrest warrant was
issued for Willis on January 2, 2015. Willis subsequently fled Galveston County
to avoid apprehension and remained a fugitive until he was arrested this
afternoon.
Willis is currently being held in custody at the Comal County
Sheriff’s Office on $250,000 bond awaiting extradition to Galveston County.
Robert R. Almonte, United States Marshal for the Western
District of Texas, states, “This afternoon, the collaborative efforts between
the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force,
and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office resulted in the apprehension of a
sexual predator who’s been on the run for 5 months. Due to the hard work of all
the officers involved, Willis will finally see his day in court.”
