Guide on Handling Officer-Involved Shootings Released

The International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services have jointly developed Officer-Involved Shootings: A Guide for Law Enforcement Leaders. The guide is organized into the following sections:
  • Pre-Incident Preparations.
  • Incident Scene Procedures.
  • Post-Incident Investigation.
  • Officer Mental Health and Wellness.
  • Media Relations.
Access the guide at http://www.theiacp.org/portals/0/documents/pdfs/e051602754_Officer_Involved_v8.pdf.
IACP and the COPS Office also have a companion brochure, Officer-Involved Shootings Investigative Protocols: A Guide for Law Enforcement Leaders (http://www.theiacp.org/Portals/0/documents/pdfs/OIS_IP_Trifold_Web.pdf).  This trifold indicates the critical steps that should be taken after an officer-involved shooting incident, and includes resources and an assessment of your approach.
