Topeka Man on Federal Supervision Arrested for August Shooting



Topeka, KS - Maleek Lashawn Hughes, 39, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task force on September 12, 2016. Hughes is a Topeka resident wanted for a violation of conditions of supervised release. A federal warrant was issued for his arrest on August 31, 2016.

Information was developed by the Kansas Apprehension Task Force that Hughes was hiding in the 700 block of SW Western Topeka, KS. Task Force members attempted to stop Hughes as he drove away from an apartment complex. Hughes was able to elude law enforcement for a brief time but was later arrested while walking in the 900 block of SW Mulvane Topeka, KS. Hughes was booked into the Shawnee County Jail.

Hughes was also wanted by the Topeka Police Department for a shooting incident which occurred on August 28, 2016 at the Kwik Shop located at102 SE 37th Street Topeka, KS. He was charged with aggravated assault, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal damage to property, as a result of that shooting.

The Kansas Apprehension Task Force is a multi-jurisdictional fugitive task force comprised of the United States Marshals Service, Topeka Police Department, Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Kansas Department of Corrections.
