U.S. Departments of Education and Justice Release Recommendations on School-Based Policing

The U.S. Departments of Education (ED) and Justice (DOJ) recently released the SECURe (Safe School-based Enforcement through Collaboration, Understanding, and Respect) State and Local Policy Rubric, which provides information and recommendations for use by state and local governments that are developing or revising written agreements and regulations related to school-based policing. SECURe has a stated goal of "preventing unnecessary or inappropriate arrests, referrals to law enforcement, contact with the juvenile justice system, and violations of civil rights laws." It includes example policies and five specified "action steps" to help ensure school-based officers are incorporated into the learning environment.
