New Kensington Man Charged with Armed Bank Robbery, Illegally Possessing Firearm

PITTSBURGH, PA—One resident of New Kensington, Pennsylvania has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on charges of armed bank robbery and violating federal firearm laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today.

According to the indictment, 28-year-old Michael J. Kramer committed armed robbery of the Economy Savings Bank located at 900 Fifth Avenue in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, on March 7, 2011. Because Kramer has a previous conviction for a felony offense, he is prohibited under federal law from possessing the firearm he allegedly brandished during the theft.

The law provides for a maximum total sentence of life in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant United States Attorney Barbara K. Swartz is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Borough of Coraopolis Police Department conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.

An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
