Eagle Butte Woman Pleads Guilty to Two Counts of Making False Statements to a Federal Agency

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Alex White Eyes, age 22, of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, appeared before United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange on March 28, 2012. White Eyes pled guilty to two counts of making false statements to a federal agency. The maximum penalty upon conviction for each count is five years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both.

The charges stem from incidents that took place on or about May 3, 2011 and again on May 12, 2011, when White Eyes gave false statements to an FBI agent about how a child’s injuries were treated at a hospital in Eagle Butte. White Eyes falsely said medical staff removed the child’s cast when she knew that was a lie.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher. A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date will be set at a later date. The defendant was released pending sentencing.
