Customs and Border Protection Officers in Southern Texas Arrest Sexual Predator

Hidalgo, Texas — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the Hidalgo International Bridge arrested an Austin, Texas man wanted in Harris County on an outstanding warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child under the age of 14.

On May 21 a 19-year-old male Mexican national, later identified as Carlos Cancino from Austin, Texas arrived at the Hidalgo/Reynosa International Bridge pedestrian walkway. The traveler had no form of identification with him. CBP officers ran records checks through law enforcement and CBP databases and the result was a possible match for a warrant from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Houston. The warrant for aggravated sexual assault of a child under the age of 14 was confirmed and the traveler was arrested and subsequently released to the custody of the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

Mr. Cancino was transported to the Hidalgo County Jail where he will wait to be extradited to Houston.

“Our ability to check people through biometrics and utilize all available law enforcement databases has enabled our officers to capture this sexual predator who faces felony charges for preying on an innocent child,” said Port Director Efrain Solis Jr.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
