CBP Night Operations in Louisville Have Multiple Banner Evenings

Louisville, Ky. - While most of the nation rests, the men and women of U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the UPS express mail facility in Louisville are up all night working to keep this country safe by intercepting illegal and dangerous contraband before it enters this nation.

Every evening, thousands of imported shipments arrive at the Louisville UPS facility for CBP processing. These parcels must be effectively and efficiently inspected and cleared by CBP to make it to destinations on time.

CBP officers at this facility routinely intercept shipments of harmful drugs, products and merchandise coming into this country through the international mail. For example on a recent night, CBP officers at the Louisville UPS facility seized multiple shipments of marijuana; fake U.S. driving licenses; postal money orders; foreign lottery tickets; khat and counterfeit merchandise including sports paraphernalia, jewelry and BlackBerry phones.

Officers use tools such as X-ray machines and radiation technology plus drug detector and agriculture canine teams to accomplish this very vital mission that continues each night. Recently, CBP in Louisville welcomed a new team member named Dailo coming to work at the express mail facility.

Dailo is a young German Shepherd narcotics detector dog who is working to help CBP officers locate and intercept marijuana, heroin, cocaine, hashish, methamphetamine and ecstasy hidden in imported shipments. So far, Dailo and his CBP officer partner have located several shipments of marijuana hidden in parcels at the facility.

“Every night is a banner night for us here in Louisville,” said David Murphy, Chicago CBP Director of Field Operations. “Our job is to ferret out the incoming harmful material so it doesn’t arrive at our businesses, neighborhoods and homes. On a typical shift, our CBP officers intercept all types of illegal drugs, fraudulent identification, counterfeit money orders, dangerous electronics and unlicensed trademark and copyrighted merchandise along with other contraband.”

During the year, CBP officers at the Louisville UPS express mail facilities examine, review and process millions of international shipments coming in from all parts of the world to keep our country safe.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
