Identifying New Illicit Drugs and Sounding the Alarm in Real Time

A new article from the Office of Justice Programs' National Institute of Justice discusses two NIJ projects that are identifying illicit substances, including previously unknown synthetic opioids, as they enter the U.S. One project identifies novel psychoactive substances, or "designer drugs," when they arrive in the U.S., then quickly alerts agencies worldwide when they are seized. The second project studies suspected deaths from unidentified drugs, and then re-examines medical and law enforcement data to better track their presence in the illicit drug markets.
