Murder Suspect Caught

February 2, 2010 - Savannah, GA - A man wanted by the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department (SCMPD) was arrested by the United States Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and SCMPD K-9 officers on February 2, 2010. Taron Maurice Williams, 25, was wanted by the Savannah Chatham Police Department on a Murder warrant from an incident that occurred on November 27, 2009. Williams is charged in the shooting death of Ajene Flannings which occurred in the 500 Block of Gwinnett Street. Williams fled the area.

The case was referred to the United States Marshals Service Savannah Office of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force to locate and arrest Williams. An intensive investigation was conducted by the Marshals Task Force over the last two months which led investigators to other counties in the state. Numerous leads were worked with the assistance of the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Department in January of 2010. On February 2, 2010, Marshals Task Force investigators worked numerous leads that led them to an address on Circle Drive off Highway 17 in Chatham County. With the assistance of SCMPD K-9 officers, the Marshals Task Force investigators surrounded the trailer and knocked and announced their presence. A female occupant of the trailer opened the door and investigators gained entrance. Williams was arrested without incident and was transported to the Police headquarters to be interviewed by detectives.

Annually, investigations carried out by the U.S. Marshals result in the apprehension of over 36, 000 federal fugitives. More federal fugitives are arrested by the Marshals Service than all other federal agencies combined.

The Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force has three offices: Atlanta, Macon, and Savannah. The task force covers the whole state of Georgia. The Savannah Office of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force is a team comprised of investigators from the Georgia Department of Corrections, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department, the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department and the United States Marshals Service. The task force objective is to seek out and arrest fugitives charged with violent crimes, drug crimes, sex offenders, and other felonies. In 2009, U.S. Marshals led task forces arrested more than 90,000 state and local fugitives on felony charges.
