A man who mailed a letter threatening to kill his attorney pled guilty on Thursday in federal court in Cedar Rapids.
Daniel Samuel Jason, 26, from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, was convicted of one count of mailing a threatening communication.
In a plea agreement, Jason admitted that he mailed a threatening letter to the attorney representing him in pursuing post-conviction relief for a stalking conviction in Johnson County, Iowa. The letter included a stick picture of a female figure with the attorney’s name, “RIP,” and a gun next to it.
Sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Jason remains in the custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Jason faces a sentence of between 18 and 27 months’ imprisonment, $100 in special assessments, three years of supervised release following any imprisonment, and up to a $250,000 fine.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger and was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
