BOSTON—A Fall River man pleaded guilty yesterday to participating in an armed bank robbery of the Rockland Trust branch on Brayton Avenue in Fall River.
Paul J. Curtis, 26, pleaded guilty to being the getaway driver in an armed bank robbery that took place in August 2011. At a plea hearing before Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, Curtis confessed to making off with just over $1,700 after his masked co-conspirator entered the bank brandishing what appeared to be a semi-automatic firearm and demanding money from the tellers. The two men were apprehended less than an hour later in Fall River. Most of the stolen money was recovered.
Curtis faces up to 25 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. At the plea hearing, the prosecutor informed the court that Curtis qualifies as a career offender under federal law. Sentencing is scheduled for July 18, 2012 at 3:00 p.m.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Richard DeLauriers, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Boston Division, made the announcement today.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Fall River Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John T. McNeil of Ortiz’s Criminal Division.
