United States Attorney Brendan V.
Johnson announced that an Eagle Butte woman charged with embezzlement and theft
from an Indian Tribal Organization was sentenced on July 17, 2012, by United
States District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Miranda Walters, age 24, was sentenced
to 14 days in custody, two years of supervised release, $2,453.35 in
restitution, and $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.
Walters was indicted by a federal grand
jury on March 13, 2012, for embezzlement and theft from an Indian Tribal
Organization. She pled guilty to the theft from an Indian Tribal Organization
charge on May 1, 2012.
Walters was an employee of the Cheyenne
River Sioux Tribe Telephone Authority’s Subway Store #52697. She admitted
stealing cash from the register on several occasions.
This case was investigated by the
Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, Law
Enforcement Division. Assistant United States Attorney Kathryn Rich prosecuted
the case.
Walters was immediately turned over to
the custody of the United States Marshals to begin serving her sentence.
