On July 16, 2012, Lee Marvin Matthews, a
twenty-two year old East St. Louis, IL, man, pled guilty to Unlawful Possession
of a Firearm by a User of a Controlled Substance, the United States Attorney
for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced today.
Matthews is scheduled to be sentenced at 9:00 a.m. on November 2, 2012, in
United States District Court in East St. Louis, at which time he faces a
maximum potential sentence of up to ten years' in prison; a fine of up to
$250,000, not more than three years of supervised release and a mandatory
special assessment of $100.
A Factual Stipulation filed in the case
indicates that in late August, 2011, Matthews knowingly possessed two firearms
in St. Clair County, Illinois – namely, a Masterpiece Arms, 9mm.,
semi-automatic pistol, and a Norinco SKS, 7.62 caliber semi-automatic rifle.
Each firearm had attached to it a large-capacity magazine – that is, a magazine
capable of accepting more than 15 rounds of ammunition. At the time of his
possession of the firearms, Matthews was an unlawful user of a controlled
substance – namely, marijuana – which he had been using daily for the previous
two years at the rate of approximately 4 - 5 grams per day.
The case was investigated by agents of
the ATF, and officers of the Centreville Police Department.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant
United States Attorney Stephen B. Clark.
