A Henry County man was charged in federal court with one
count of coercion and/or enticement for allegedly attempting to persuade
several Asian minors he met online to engage in sexual activity.
Thomas E. Oberhaus, 56, of Napoleon, is accused of engaging
in this behavior between 2013 and 2016, according to the criminal information.
If convicted, the defendant's sentence will be determined by
the Court after reviewing factors unique to this case, including the
defendant's prior criminal record, if any, the defendant's role in the offense
and the characteristics of the violation.
In all cases the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum and in
most cases it will be less than the maximum.
This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of
Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracey Ballard
Tangeman.
An information is only a charge and is not evidence of
guilt. The burden of proof is always on
the government to prove a defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
