May 17, 2010 - Robert D. Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is asking for the public’s help in identifying the individual who is responsible for the robbery of eleven (11) banks in and around the downtown Chicago area since February of last year. In making this appeal, Mr. Grant announced that a reward of up to $10,000 was being offered by the FBI for information leading to the identification and arrest of the individual involved.
The most recent incident was an attempted robbery on January 29, 2010, at the Midwest Bank branch, located at 500 West Monroe in Chicago. According to witnesses, the robber entered the bank, approached the teller counter, and orally announced a robbery. The robber then handed the teller a note claiming to be armed with a weapon and threatening the bank employee with harm if his demands for cash were not met. The teller then turned her back on the robber, and when she turned back around, the robber and demand note were gone.
Other robberies believed to be committed by this individual are Citibank, 11 S. LaSalle, 2/11/09; Citibank 100 S. Michigan, 5/29/09; Citibank, 222 W. Adams, 6/19/09; Citibank, 100 S. Michigan, 7/17/09; Fifth Third, 57 E. Randolph, 10/22/09; Citibank, 111 W. Jackson, 10/22/09; Fifth Third, 161 N. Clark, 10/30/09; National City, 401 N. LaSalle, 11/05/09; National City, 401 N. LaSalle, 12/22/09; and Citibank, 111 W. Jackson, 1/08/10.
No shots were fired in any of the robberies and no injuries were reported.
The “Citibank Bandit” is described as a white/male, 40-45 years of age, 5’8” – 5’11” tall, 160-180 lbs., medium build, with blonde hair and blue eyes and frequently wears a baseball type cape with a red logo. He has been given the moniker of “Citibank Bandit” as six of the first seven banks he robbed were Citibank branches.
This case is being investigated by the Chicago FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF), which is comprised of FBI Special Agents, Detectives from the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and Investigators from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
