PHILADELPHIA—Carmen Miranda, 74, of Philadelphia, pled guilty today to willfully failing to file tax returns and was immediately sentenced to one year of probation. Carmen Miranda also entered into a stipulated settlement agreement in which she agreed to pay $218,582.92 to the Internal Revenue Service to satisfy the federal civil taxes, interest, and penalties she owes, as well as forfeit $47,036.89. Miranda received approximately $54,649 in gross income in 2006, was required to file income tax returns for that year, knew this, and failed to file the tax returns.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sarah L. Grieb.
