Mission Man Pleads Guilty to Sexual Abuse of a Minor


United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Robert Romero, age 34, of Mission, South Dakota, appeared before United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange on July 3, 2012, and pled guilty to sexual abuse of a minor. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 15 years’ custody, a $250,000 fine, or both.

During the time period of June 24, 2004 to June 30, 2004, in Mission, Romero had sexual contact with a 12-year-old female.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers.

A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for September 26, 2012. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshals Service pending sentencing.
