U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson
announced that William Smith, charged with possession of a prohibited object by
an inmate, was sentenced on August 22, 2012, by Chief U.S. District Judge Karen
E. Schreier. Smith, age 31, was sentenced to four months in prison, to be
served consecutively to the sentence he is currently serving, and a $100
special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.
Smith was indicted for possession of a
prohibited object (marijuana) by a federal grand jury on May 2, 2012. Smith, an
inmate of the Yankton Federal Prison Camp in Yankton, South Dakota, was caught
by prison staff smoking marijuana in an inmate restroom on February 25, 2012.
Smith pled guilty to the charge on June 8, 2012.
The investigation was conducted by the
Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S.
Attorney Ann Hendrickson.
The defendant was remanded to the
custody of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
