San Ysidro, Calif. - U.S. Customs and
Border Protection officers at the San Ysidro port of entry over the weekend
discovered 637 pounds in a commercial bus.
At about 12 p.m., August 26, CBP
officers encountered a 56-year old male Mexican citizen driving a 1999
commercial bus as he waited in line to enter the United States. A CBP officer
and his canine were screening vehicles and the detector dog alerted to the bus.
The driver was ordered to the secondary inspection area for a more in-depth
inspection.
CBP officers subsequently discovered 140
packages of marijuana in the fuel tank of the bus, valued at $955,000.
CBP officers seized the bus and
marijuana. The driver was arrested and transported to the Metropolitan
Correctional Center.
“This is a good example of the hard work
performed daily by CBP officers at ports of entry,” said Assistant Port
Director, Joseph Misenhelter. “Our CBP officers make a difference every day in
their efforts to protect the homeland.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)
is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged
with the management, control, and protection of our Nation's borders at and
between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and
terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
