April 20, 2010 - Douglas, Ariz. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers stopped an illegal exportation of 1,000 rounds of ammunition plus 20 magazines designed for 9mm ammunition.
On April 19 at about 1 p.m. CBP officers were screening travelers in the south-bound lane that directs traffic from the U.S. into Mexico. CBP officers came in contact with a 2001Ford Excursion being driven by a 26-year-old woman identified as a United States citizen and resident of Douglas, Ariz. The woman was accompanied by a 28-year-old man who was also identified as a United States citizen and a Douglas resident. CBP officers became suspicious and searched the vehicle and discovered 25 boxes (1,000 rounds) of 30 caliber ammunition along with 20 magazines designed to hold 9mm rounds.
“We are not certain of the destination of the ammo and magazines that were seized today,” said Michael Humphries, area port director for the Douglas/Naco ports of entry, “but one thing is for sure, if this ammo would have fallen into the hands of the drug cartels it would have certainly been used to threaten the lives of many to include law enforcement and any one else that apposes their agenda. Customs and Border Protection remains firm in the commitment to secure our nation’s borders.”
CBP officers seized all of the ammunition and magazines. The man was turned over to custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation and prosecution. The woman was turned over to ICE for further questioning.
