Oakdale Federal Correctional Institution Inmate Sentenced on Assault Charges

April 22, 2010 - LAFAYETTE, LA—Alberto Gallegos-Velazquez, 29, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI), in Oakdale, La., was sentenced to spend an additional 51 months in prison and ordered to pay restitution to the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) in the amount of $158,115.22, for an assault of another inmate which resulted in serious bodily injury, Acting United States Attorney William J. Flanagan announced. Today’s sentence was imposed by United States District Judge Patricia Minaldi in Lake Charles.

Gallegos-Velazquez was charged by a federal grand jury in November 2009 in an indictment charging him with assault which resulted in serious bodily injury. Gallegos-Velazquez admitted to striking another inmate, and pled guilty to this crime on January 21, 2010. The June 22, 2009 attack took place in the recreational yard at FCI Oakdale, La. As a result of the attack, the victim inmate suffered numerous injuries, including seizures, loss of speech, and an inability to move his right extremities. Additionally, the inmate was found to have a skull fracture and an intra-cranial hemorrhage.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brett L. Grayson.
