Smugglers Abandon Marijuana on Banks of Rio Grande
April 26, 2010 - McAllen, Texas — U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the McAllen, Texas Station seized 552 pounds of marijuana early Monday south of Mission.
Agents on patrol observed a raft with several men coming across the Rio Grande River. The men were transporting what appeared to be bundles of narcotics. Agents patrolling on bicycles and all-terrain vehicles responded to the area where they found the men loading a van with the contraband. The smugglers, including the driver of the van, ran toward the river and swam to Mexico taking one of the bundles with them.
The Drug Enforcement Administration assumed custody of the marijuana, which had an estimated value of $441,600.
