Registered Sex-Offender

U.S. Border Patrol Arrests One More Registered Sex-Offender

April 06, 2010 - Wellton, Ariz. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Yuma Sector arrested their second sex offender in less than a week Friday morning.

Agents from the Wellton Station encountered Giovanni Rivas-Arteaga, a native and citizen of El Salvador, near Gila Bend, Ariz. Agents took Rivas into custody for being illegally present within the United States and transported him to the Wellton Station for further processing.

Records checks revealed that Rivas was a previously deported sex offender with an extensive criminal history that included Spousal Abuse, Indecent Exposure, and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. Rivas’ prior felony convictions had netted him a combined three years in jail with a combined nine years of probation. Rivas will be prosecuted for illegal reentry of the United States, and deported to his country of origin.

The apprehension and deportation of convicted sex offenders is one of the means by which the United States Border Patrol serves to improve the quality of life in our communities along the border.
