June 3, 2010 - Yuma, Ariz. — U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Yuma Sector arrested three suspected drug smugglers and seized nearly a half-million dollars of marijuana in two separate incidents on Tuesday.
Early Tuesday morning, Border Patrol agents assigned to the Wellton Station referred a tractor trailer hauling bales of hay for secondary inspection after a canine team alerted to the trailer. During inspection, agents discovered several large bundles of marijuana stuffed between the hay bales.
The tractor trailer was transported to Yuma Sector Border Patrol Headquarters where agents uncovered a total of 17 bundles weighing 431 pounds with an estimated street value of $344,800. The driver was arrested and turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration along with the bundles of marijuana.
On Tuesday afternoon, two men drove up to the immigration checkpoint on Highway 78 in a 1999 Toyota Solara. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Blythe Station referred the vehicle for secondary inspection after the driver told agents he did not have a valid driver’s license. In secondary, a Border Patrol canine team alerted to the rear of the vehicle where agents later discovered four bundles hidden inside the bumper and another 37 bundles inside the rear quarter panels.
Agents seized a total of 41 bundles weighing 144 pounds with an estimated street value of $115,890. Agents arrested the driver and passenger and turned them over to the DEA along with the marijuana.
