Former Boston Man Sentenced to 15 Months in Prison for Failing to Report to Prison

BOSTON, MA—A Bradford man, formerly of Boston, was sentenced today in federal court for failing to surrender for service of his prison sentence.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz; Richard DesLauriers, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation - Boston Field Division; and William P. Offord, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation - Boston Field Office, announced today that CHUONG VAN DUONG, 61, of Bradford, formerly of Boston, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock to 15 months’ imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release. Duong was convicted by Judge Woodlock on June 18, 2010 of failing to report to prison to serve his sentence as ordered. Today’s sentence will run consecutively with his current sentence.

Evidence presented during the one-day trial proved that in May, 2009, Duong was sentenced to prison by a federal judge in Massachusetts and ordered to report on June 5, 2009 to a prison facility designated by the Bureau of Prisons. Approximately one week before the reporting date, Duong cut off his electronic bracelet, left his residence, and fled to Canada, thus failing to report to prison on June 5, 2009 as ordered.

The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark J. Balthazard of Ortiz’s Economic Crimes Unit.
