SAN JUAN, PR—Today, August 18, 2011, a federal grand jury returned a one-count indictment against Ángel Ayala-Vázquez for forcibly assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, intimidating, and interfering with a Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Senior Officer, while engaged in and on account of the performance of his official duties. The assault involved physical contact with the victim, announced Rosa Emilia Rodríguez-Vélez, United States Attorney for the District of Puerto Rico.
On August 16, 2010, defendant Ayala-Vázquez was involved in an altercation with a Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Correctional Officer. Ayala-Vázquez assaulted the officer as he flushed a cellular telephone down the toilet. Ayala-Vázquez knocked the officer to the ground and held him there, as he got rid of the contraband. The cell phone was subsequently recovered.
The case is being investigated by BOP and FBI, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carmen Márquez.
