Providence Man Pleads Guilty to Armed Bank Robbery


April 8, 2010 - PROVIDENCE, RI—Anthony Miller, 22, of Providence, R.I., pled guilty Thursday to robbing a Warwick branch of the Pawtucket Credit Union of about $7,700 in July 2009. United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha announced the guilty plea which was entered before U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith.

Anthony Miller was indicted by a federal grand jury on November 4, 2009 on one count of bank robbery.

Miller is scheduled to be sentenced on July 8, 2010. He has been detained since his arrest in July.

Background

On July 24, 2009, Anthony Miller entered the Warwick Avenue branch of the Pawtucket Credit Union carrying a duffel bag. He pointed a black revolver at a teller and told the teller to put all the cash in the bag. Miller then took the duffel bag to a second teller where he made a similar demand. Miller then fled into a wooded area behind the bank. A search of the area for the defendant was unsuccessful.

The following day, a Warwick patrolman stopped a car driven by Miller for failure to have a license plate attached. Miller was unable to provide any personal identification and was acting nervously, according to the officer. He then made voluntary statements to the officer regarding the bank robbery and made a full confession to police supervisors who responded to the

Acting on Miller’s statements, a duffel bag containing $5,762, a black replica revolver and clothing matching what Miller wore during the robbery were located in the woods behind the bank.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Zechariah Chafee. The matter was investigated by Warwick Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
